Internal medicine is the science that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease that develop in adults. These doctors or internists as they are called are specifically trained to handle chronic adult diseases and even situations where a number of diseases could affect an adult at the same time. Generally the doctors providing internal medicine are general practitioners. However they can also specialize in any of its branches.
Depending on the specialization that they have taken up, the internists can handle physical, social and sexual problems of growing adolescents and young adults. They can provide diagnosis and treatments related to allergies involving respiratory tract diseases, skin disorders, reaction to some kinds of drugs and chemicals, bone marrow or organ transplantation, etc. Internists also provide the correct diagnosis and treatment of the heart, blood vessels and the entire blood circulation system in the body. Internal medicine also involves the prevention and cure of infectious diseases caused by different kinds of bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. These are just a few branches of internal medicine that have been covered. This field covers diagnosis and treatment of almost every part of the body.
An in depth knowledge of the particular sub – field is required in order to be able to diagnose and treat the various diseases. Apart from this being general practitioners, it is very important for these doctors to be able to give a proper method of living a healthy lifestyle so that all the diseases occurring in men and women can be prevented successfully.
