Anesthesiology is the science of inducing the state of anesthesia which means temporarily blocking the feeling of sensation or pain. It is done with the help of an anesthetic like different derivatives of cocaine. Once the anesthetic is administered into the body, it could result in different reactions given by the body like, loss of muscle responses, loss of stress response, amnesia, etc. Of course, these states in which the body enters after the anesthetic administration are temporary and reversible. This has a very important usage during surgeries, wherein patients undergoing various surgeries can experience no pain, which they would otherwise experience.
In anesthesiology, there are different types of anesthesia involved. Local anesthesia is given within a particular location on the body like teeth, finger, etc. Regional anesthesia affects a larger part of the body like the lower portion of the body. General anesthesia is a complete state of unconsciousness which is obtained by administering anesthetic agents which could result in amnesia, loss of reflexes of the autonomic nervous system, etc. The last type is dissociative anesthesia that helps in blocking signals to the conscious mind and as a result the patient who is administered with this anesthetic seems completely disassociated from his surroundings.
Special training is required to administer these drugs. Professionals who are experts in this field are called anesthesiologists. They normally are present during a surgery and provide medical care before, during and after the surgery. They are responsible for creating a customized anesthesia plan for the patient according to his requirements, after consulting with the surgery team. Not only this, the anesthesiologists also discusses with the patient the effects and after effects of the anesthetics used. A physician has to undergo an extensive training in order to qualify as an anesthesiologist and looking at the minute detail and safety with which this exercise has to be done, this training is extremely necessary.
